Queen Anne Lutheran (QALC), ELCA, Seattle, Washington, enthusiastically announces an opening for the full-time position of cantor. QALC is a community of faith committed to the mission of proclaiming God’s love in Christ for every person. Worship and outreach are at the heart of all we do. The role of the cantor is to ensure that God is glorified, and the gospel proclaimed, through the musical life of the congregation and in select events for the community. The cantor works together in ministry with the pastor, staff, and people of QALC to involve the worshiping community in making high-quality, beautiful music together.  By this work, it is the hope of QALC that the cantor will experience true Christian community.

The cantor plans and leads the music for all worship; recruits, directs, or otherwise provides for leadership for vocal choirs and instrumental ensembles for all ages; plans worship with the pastor; and provides for the maintenance and care of instruments and choir music files. This congregation has had a robust music program involving adult choir, high school choir, children’s choir, instruments, and handbells, as well as a Fine Arts Ministry with concerts, art exhibits, and lectures. The 25-stop tracker action pipe organ, built by Robert Wech of Buchloe, Germany, was installed in 2010.

Cantor is the historic designation for the vocation of the Lutheran church musician. The role of the Cantor is to ensure that God is glorified, and the gospel proclaimed through the musical life of the congregation. The Cantor is responsible for leading the musical expression of the people–the assembly, choral groups, solos singers and instrumentalists–among whom organists have been especially important for Lutherans. The Cantor works together in ministry with the pastor, staff, and people of Queen Anne Lutheran to involve the worshiping community in making high-quality, beautiful music together.

Job Qualifications

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Support congregational song through musical leadership and accompaniment on the pipe organ and piano for weekly worship on Sunday mornings, special services in Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, and other designated worship opportunities for the congregation.
  2. Select preludes, offertories, postludes, and ensemble music, including pieces from a diverse musical idiom, appropriate to the liturgical calendar and seasonal theme. Supply information on selected music (organ, piano, choral, and instrumental) to the parish administrator in a timely manner for inclusion in the weekly bulletin.
  3. Participate in worship planning with the pastor and prepare a worship musical design each week to assist the parish administrator in bulletin preparation; proofread the bulletin before printing.
  4. Conduct the chancel choir at weekly rehearsals. They currently sing on Sunday mornings, early September through Holy Trinity Sunday.
  5. Through music, lead the children and youth, engaging and enhancing musical reading, singing, and instrument skills.
  6. Engage middle and high school youth in music for worship, fostering their participation and a sense of their leadership in worship.
  7. Provide for solo, small ensemble, or instrumental music for Sundays during the summer months and for special services during the year when the regular choirs are not scheduled to serve.
  8. Provide music for wedding and funeral worship services as scheduled by the staff.
  9. Arrange for substitute musicians and provide preparation support for them during the Cantor’s time away from regular duties at Queen Anne Lutheran Church.
  10. Maintain the music library and supervise the care and maintenance, and the repair of all instruments: pipe organ, pianos, handbells, Orff instruments, rhythm instruments, etc. Provide for the maintenance and care of the choir garments.
  11. Support and give guidance to the Fine Arts Committee in providing fine arts events in keeping with the mission statement of the fine arts ministry.
  12. Maintain professional competency by adequately planning, preparing, and practicing, as well as attending continuing educational opportunities.
  13. Participate in Worship & Music Committee meetings as scheduled. Work with the Worship & Music Committee to propose an annual budget.
  14. Encouraged to attend congregational activities, particularly following worship, as schedule permits.
  15. Additional tasks as mutually determined with the Pastor.
